As you’ll already know, the Protocol began as the Return to Work Safely Protocol, and it was first published in May 2020. Since then, the document has been constantly evolving as the coronavirus situation and public health advice has changed.

Now, this latest version of the Protocol incorporates the most current advice on the measures needed to reduce the spread of COVID-19 in the community and workplaces. It widens the range of preventative measures required, and now includes information on how to approach the use of antigen testing.

The Protocol applies to all businesses in all sectors, and includes up to date information for employers on the various steps you need to put in place to:

  • Prevent the spread of COVID-19 in the workplace.
  • Facilitate the reopening of workplaces following temporary closures.
  • Ensure the ongoing safe operation of workplaces.

What’s in the latest Protocol update?

The latest update includes information on wearing face coverings, ventilation of workplaces, and the use of antigen testing.

If you want to introduce a testing regime in your business, the Protocol includes advice for both employers and employees on how to manage this effectively.

Big focus on health & safety compliance

The Health and Safety Authority, along with other state inspectorates, has carried out nearly 33,000 COVID-19 inspections around compliance with the Protocol since May 2020.

The government has also allocated an additional €4m to the Health and Safety Authority for its 2021 budget.

This funding will allow the Health and Safety Authority to set up a new Occupational Health Division, which will focus on how organisations are managing COVID-19 in the workplace.

So, as we look forward to a busy reopening period, you also need to remember your health & safety obligations, and this year it’s going to be more important than ever to ensure your workplace has the latest measures in place.
